The engine of the club (3rd – 6th Grade) keep the wheels turning in the quest for finals glory with the mighty 5th grade side securing a home semi-final in the One-Day competition with a comprehensive victory over Valleys in their last one-day fixture of the tournament.
With a bold call from the Valleys skipper he invited captain Marc Hussey to bat first on Ken Mackay Oval, a call that is rarely seen in the modern day. Pease and Keble (Client) were solid in their opening stand with a flurry of boundaries from the early overs from some loose bowling. However, the Valleys seamers warmed with the innings clawing back the scoring and dismissing both openers with the score on 2/39. Enter Lachlan Mark, the young Taverner batsman consolidated and showed great maturity in becoming the linchpin of the innings. Excellent running between wickets and field manipulation took the pressure of the side and allowed Dylan McDonald to score freely with six boundaries and 1 six on his way to 37 (27). With Lachlan finishing the innings on an unbeaten 71* contributions from the tail saw the final innings total at 7/224.
Early wickets were key, and Jamie Marlsen provided with the first wicket with the score on 3. The evergreen Danny Francis then took the reins with 3 wickets in his opening spell and Valleys were in exactly that, a big hole at 5/25. Credit to the Valleys middle order who put up solid defence and dug deep to give their side a glimmer of hope however the continued pressure from all 7 bowlers used saw the glory shared with Danny Francis leading the way ending with 4/29 (8).
A home final in January is almost unheard of for the patrons of #theyard and who better to play at home than the students from University. The game is scheduled for a 12:30pm start on Sunday (19th Jan) with Slashers Deck in full swing!
